In a town in scenic southwestern Colorado homeowners are battling over whether a Christmas wreath that includes a peace sign is an anti-Iraq war protest or even a promotion of Satan.
"We have had three or four complaints. Some people have kids in Iraq and they are sensitive," said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Lynda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. He also said some believe it is a symbol of Satan.
Seeder's Note: It is distressing to say the least to see this. I'm at a loss for words to express how terrifying this is. I can understand that people have loved ones in Iraq in the war - but I fail to see how a peace sign is in any way disrespectful.
To me, however, the most disturbing and, frankly, frightening part of this article is the president of the HOA's statement: "It's also an anti-Christ sign. That's how it started". This makes me physically sick. Would a Jewish family be required to take down a Star of David or a menorah if they chose to display one outside of their home? There is a point where covenants can encrouch on the Constitutional rights of homeowners - and it is clear that in this case, the rights are not being simply nudged - they are being obliterated. I am disappointed and disgusted to share a state with such an organization and such a man as Kearns.
It breaks my heart to see such a beautiful sign that simply symbolizes the hope for peace violated by such hatred and intolerance. And as a practicing pagan, I am deeply disturbed by the precedent this sets.
